I live here in Bend Oregon where the Deschutes River runs right through the center of town. It rarely rains so a large portion of the river water comes from the snow melts on the mountains. The water starts fresh and gets dirtier as it flows until eventually in drops into the sea and becomes salt water. This is the natural pattern of life on earth. Things that start out fresh grow stale. New becomes old. Excitement fades to expectation. Decay is the law of the land and unfortunately our sin and the sin of all humanity has tied us to it. We see this pattern nearly everywhere; in our bodies, our buildings, our movements and our politics. The one exception? God.
God alone is the source of life and that life never grows old. The Bible tells us in Hebrews chapter 13 that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." His faithfulness never fades. His love is beyond our comprehension and it never grows cold or distant. He is the infinite source. Where the environment pollutes our natural rivers, the river of God purifies the polluted environment.
The Bible tells us about this river in Ezekiel 47 "He asked me, “Have you been watching, son of man?” Then he led me back along the riverbank. 7When I returned, I was surprised by the sight of many trees growing on both sides of the river. 8Then he said to me, “This river flows east through the desert into the valley of the Dead Sea.b The waters of this stream will make the salty waters of the Dead Sea fresh and pure."
Amazing! A river that gathers momentum as it goes until finally it crashes into the Dead Sea and brings it to life! The river of God brings life to the dead! This is incredibly good news for us considering that from the minute we are born our lives are headed toward death and decay. The hope that has turned to scepticism can be restored! The joy that has turned to sorrow can be renewed! The courage that has turned to defeat can be reborn! The relationship that has been broken can be mended. In Christ the old becomes new. The dead rise and the lame walk. This river gathers momentum and changes everything!
God is calling you to jump in the water. It's time to surrender your life to the river. Call on Him and allow His life to come crashing into yours and the dead places will be restored! Take a few minutes and read Ezekiel 47 1-12 and see for yourself how God describes this river. Maybe you don't believe. Maybe you are a skeptic. Maybe you have become jaded. Maybe, just maybe that doesn't disqualify you but it actually qualifies you. His desire all along has been to bring you life and restore your hope. Maybe it's time that you stop running and step into the river that changes everything.
If you are ready to let God invade your life and would like to talk more about this river and how to embrace it send me a message.
